Why your business needs a website that is not on Wix

Wix is easy. Squarespace looks nice. WordPress has a million plugins. So why would anyone pay for a custom-coded website?

Because those platforms are designed for everyone, which means they are optimized for no one. And if your business depends on people finding you on Google and calling you, that matters.

The speed problem

Template sites carry a lot of weight. Wix loads dozens of scripts, trackers, and animation libraries whether you use them or not. The average Wix site scores between 40 and 65 on Google PageSpeed. A custom-coded site scores 95 to 100. Google uses speed as a ranking factor. Faster site, higher rank, more calls.

The SEO problem

Wix and Squarespace generate HTML that is bloated and hard for search engines to parse cleanly. You can add SEO plugins and meta tags, but you are fighting the platform the whole way. Custom sites give you complete control over every tag, every heading, every piece of structured data. Nothing is hidden behind a drag-and-drop editor.

The "you do not own it" problem

If you build on Wix, your site lives on Wix. You cannot move it somewhere else without rebuilding it from scratch. You are renting, not owning. If Wix raises their prices (they already have, twice), you either pay more or start over. With a custom site, you own the code. You can host it anywhere. You can hand it to any developer in the world and they can work on it.

The look-alike problem

There are roughly 200 popular Wix templates. Your competitors are using the same ones. Customers notice, even if they cannot articulate why. When every plumber's website has the same layout with a different logo, nobody stands out. A custom site looks like your business, not like a template with your logo pasted on.

When Wix is actually fine

If you need a personal blog, a hobby portfolio, or a simple page for a side project, Wix is fine. It is cheap and fast to set up. But if your business depends on search traffic, phone calls, and conversions, a custom site pays for itself.

What it costs

Custom sites do not have to cost $15,000. At N5 Studio, a 5-page hand-coded site starts at $400 with hosting at $47 per month. That is less than most Wix business plans when you factor in the plugins and add-ons you end up paying for anyway.

The difference is that a custom site grows with your business. You can add AI chatbots, booking systems, and SEO features without fighting a platform that was not designed for them.
