SEO in Rockford, IL: what actually gets a local business found on Google

If you run a service business in Rockford, SEO mostly comes down to one question: when somebody in town searches for what you do, does your name come up? For a lot of local businesses the answer is no.

I checked 340 Rockford-area businesses across 97 trades on Google this year. 165 of them, 48.5%, never showed up on page one when someone searched for their own trade in Rockford. Most of those owners had no idea.

Here is how local search in Rockford actually works right now, and what moves the needle.

The map pack gets the calls

Search almost any service in Rockford on your phone, like "plumber rockford il" or "lawn care near me." The first thing you see is a map with three businesses on it. That's the map pack, and it sits above everything else on every local search I've tested here.

Those three spots come from Google Business Profiles, not websites. So the first piece of SEO for a local business isn't the website at all. It's the Google profile:

  • The right primary category (this matters more than almost anything else)
  • Your service area towns filled in: Rockford, Loves Park, Machesney Park, Roscoe, Belvidere, Cherry Valley, wherever you really work
  • Real photos of your jobs, added regularly
  • Reviews, and replies to every one of them
  • Hours, phone and website that match everywhere else online

Below the map, directories take a lot of the spots

Under the map, a big chunk of page one isn't businesses at all. In my Rockford check, about 38% of first-page spots went to Yelp, Facebook, Angi, BBB and other directories. For some trades it was 8 out of 10.

That means two things. Your listings on those sites count, because that's where a lot of people land. And your own website has to be clearly about one service in one area to beat them.

What your website needs for Rockford SEO

  • A page for each service you actually make money on, with the service and the city in the title. "Drain cleaning in Rockford, IL" beats "Services."
  • Your service area written out in plain words, not just a map image
  • Your phone number as a tap-to-call link at the top of every page on a phone
  • Fast load on a phone. Google measures it, and people leave slow sites
  • Real photos and real reviews, not stock pictures
  • Answers to the questions people ask before they call: price ranges, how soon you can come out, what areas you cover
  • Schema markup, which is code that tells Google your business name, service, area and hours in a format it reads directly

Keep your expectations honest

Local search terms in Rockford are small. Most "service + rockford il" searches get somewhere around 70 searches a month. Ranking first for one of those is maybe 20 visits a month. That's still worth having, because those are people ready to hire, but anybody promising you thousands of visitors from Rockford SEO is selling something.

The upside is that the competition is thin. Most local businesses haven't done the basics above, so doing them properly gets you ahead of a lot of people.

Google first, then the AI assistants

More people are also asking ChatGPT and Google's AI answers for a recommendation now, like "who's a good roofer in Rockford?" Those assistants lean on the same things Google does: your Google profile, your reviews, the directories and a website that clearly says what you do and where. Get the Google side right and you're most of the way there on the AI side too.
